Design Engineer

We have a fantastic new opportunity for a Design Engineer to join one of our clients in the Consett area. The company specialises in the reverse engineering of rotating equipment. They service and repair all variety of large industrial pumps to blue chip customers in the UK and abroad, such as major Oil & Gas and Electricity companies. Pumps range; from multi-stage, high pressure units to small, over-hung end suction pumps. Spare parts are also manufactured in the machine shop.

Our client is at an exciting point in their development and this is a new position in the engineering team which has arisen due to considerable growth.


Job Summary:


The successful applicant will report directly to the Engineering Department Manager whilst supporting a busy Production team, and will have proven experience in mechanical engineering design, 3D modelling, using a portable CMM (Faro Arm) and in the production of manufacturing drawings, specifications and documentation.  


This position plays a pivotal role in producing technical solutions to complex engineering projects, the main focus being on providing a full reverse engineering package for pumps and rotating equipment; it is therefore desirable that the candidate has experience in this area.  Strong attention to detail is required, along with the ability to work to tight timescales and stringent standards without compromising on quality or cost. Some overseas and UK travel may be required for short periods.



Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: 

  • Preparing design documentation for production (component design, technical drawings, assembly instructions and parts lists)

  • Creating new items and bills of materials within the MRP system

  • Defining new BoM structures for operations use within the MRP system

  • Use customer information/samples to create 3D models.

  • Use portable CMM (Faro Arm) to 3D model parts in order to manufacture new ones

  • Working closely with other departments to provide relevant information as required

  • Cross check colleague’s technical drawings to ensure they comply with company standards and samples

  • Contributing to design reviews where required

  • Use Solidworks software to produce models and drawings

  • Maintaining, where necessary, existing design information using software packages

  • Provide engineering support and technical guidance as and when required.

  • Refining 3D models in the product range

  • Follow company processes and procedures

Person Specification:


  • Mechanical Engineering background: ONC/HNC/HND in mechanical engineering is preferred

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including casting, forging, machining, and metal fabrication

  • Excellent 2D and 3D design skills with experience of Solidworks

  • Experience of using a CMM, Faro Arm or similar

  • Understanding and interpretation of engineering and drawing standards.

  • Understanding of pumps and rotating equipment

  • Experience in the use of FEA would be an advantage

  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently

  • Proven ability to execute and deliver projects within specific time frames

  • Ability to work within a team with initiative and minimum supervision
